How to Relieve Foot Pain and Find The Right Size

overland

There is nothing worse than dealing with foot pain! It is enough to make you feel moody, exhausted, and just wanting to get the day over and done with.

But what if we told you that your footwear is not meant to cause foot pain? Odds are, you are most likely not wearing the correct size.
In this blog, we discuss ways to relieve foot pain and how to ensure that you find the right size.

Tips For Relieving Foot Pain

1. Stretch

Never underestimate the power of a good stretch!

People often neglect foot stretches because it's an easy part of the body to forget about, especially if you live a life where you are always on the move.

However, practising different stretches for your feet at least once a week can help to relieve pain, and even strengthen your muscles in this area. Some good exercises to consider are:

  • Tennis Ball Rolls
  • Beach Walks
  • Toe Curls
  • Achilles Stretch
  • Calf Raise
  • Single Leg Hops

These are just to name a few, but if practised correctly, each exercise can impact your foot health and care, which will leave you feeling much better overall.

2. Elevate Your Feet

In many cases, at the end of a long day, swelling in your ankle and feet can occur. This is due to the hot weather, pregnancy, or even just spending a lot of time on your feet that day – these are, of course, the non-serious causes, and if you are experiencing painful swelling that is not a result of this, then seek medical attention immediately.

Elevation is the key to this. When you elevate your feet above your heart level, it allows less stress on the heart to pump blood in that direction.

3. Soothing Bathe

Sometimes, all our feet need is a little bit of pampering.

So, after a long day, draw yourself a warm foot bath and add Epsom salts. This will help to soothe the aching muscles in your feet. Epsom salts are also a great, natural ingredient that can help soften calluses and rough skin. It can also help to reduce inflammation.

4. Massage

Massaging your feet is yet another good way to help soothe any aching muscles. Grab a bottle of lotion, cross your legs, and give your feet a good massage. It is important to really take your time at each section, working your way from the heel to the arch, all the way up to your toe tips. You may find that not only does this relieve foot pain, but it may also soothe your body and relieve pain in other sections of your body.\

5. Anti-Inflammatory Medication

Over-the-counter pain relievers or anti-inflammatory medication could really help reduce pain faster. Additionally, if you find that your foot pain is frequent and unmanageable, then seek assistance from a podiatrist.

Selecting The Right Size

Selecting the correct footwear size may seem like an easy, no-need-to-explain kind of task. However, there are a few things to consider when choosing footwear that people often forget.

Firstly, don’t assume that your size will be the same with every footwear brand. Much like clothes, sizing varies, so always try them on.
Once you try on a pair of shoes, ensure that you take a couple of steps. This allows you to feel if your feet still have enough space at the toe area and if it fits at the ball of your feet. You will also be able to feel if the overall fit is too snug or even perhaps too loose. And remember, footwear should fit comfortably from the beginning – so let go of the tired ‘it needs to be broken in’ theory.

Always pay attention to the width as well as the length. Often, people only focus on the fit of their footwear in terms of length, but the width is equally as important, otherwise, you'll be left with feet feeling suffocated at the end of the day.

When trying on footwear, ensure that the socks you are wearing are the same style that you would wear with this specific shoe so that you know exactly what the overall fit feels like.
