This month, we did the research, and we bring you the ultimate backpacking guide. From research to look into, to tips and advice on packing, and of course, destinations in South Africa that are a must, we’re helping you plan the adventure of a lifetime!

What Is Backpacking?

The term backpacking actually dates back to the early 1900s and originally referred to wilderness hiking with a pack on your back (groundbreaking, we know). When looking into the origins of this activity, many have traced it back to the rise in popularity of hiking the Appalachian Trail.

But over time, it’s evolved into a travel movement; one that’s less about compass points and more about cultural connection, freedom, and seeing the world on your own terms.

These days, backpacking is seen as part travel, part soul-searching. Essentially, it’s a chance to embrace minimalism, stretch your budget, and swap four-star hotels for starry skies.

Although some popular backpacking destination spots do offer a dorm-style lodge, meaning you don’t necessarily have to travel with camping gear, and instead can enjoy a minimalist dorm, shared with other like-minded travellers. This can be a great way to meet new people from other parts of the world.

4. Baviaanskloof

Baviaanskloof is a true off-grid adventure! This remote location offers backpackers the chance to escape city life, unplug from tech and just bask in the beauty of nature. Think: 4x4 roads, dramatic cliffs, river crossings, and barely any cell signal.

The wild camping, eco lodges, and rustic cabins add to the full experience and make this location ideal for spotting wildlife. Although this location may be better suited for the more experienced backpacker, it is still a destination that should remain on your bucket list!

5. The Wild Coast

Many backpackers rave about the Wild Coast’s raw beauty and cultural authenticity. Offering warm beaches, rural Xhosa villages, and cliffside hikes, there is much to see at this destination!

This destination is especially convenient for backpackers travelling on foot, as the villages are fairly easy to trek between. Backpacker buses like BazBus connect major towns, making it accessible even without your own transport.

Here you can enjoy surfing activities, village tours, and coastal hikes.

Ready to Begin Your Backpacking Journey? Here’s A Checklist

Here’s a quick checklist to help you pack smart:

1. Choose the right backpack – Comfort and durability are key. Look for one that fits your frame, has good back support, and can handle a bit of rough handling.

2. Pack light, but wisely – Stick to versatile clothing you can layer, and avoid overpacking. Remember: you’ll be carrying this bag on your back, so every extra item counts.

3. Bring a power bank and a universal adapter – Whether you’re navigating offline maps or snapping photos, you’ll want to stay charged.

4. Carry a durable pouch or organiser for your essentials – Keep your passport, documents, cash and chargers safe and accessible.

5. Don’t forget toiletries and a basic first aid kit – Travel-size everything is your friend, and a few plasters never hurt.

6. Pack a lightweight raincoat or poncho – Especially if you’re headed to places known for unpredictable weather like the Drakensberg or Tsitsikamma.

7. Comfortable walking shoes are non-negotiable – Your feet will thank you later!
